Bulbs & plants

When do I plant my flower bulbs?
The ideal planting time for flower bulbs varies by variety and depends on your climate zone. Spring-flowering bulbs are generally best planted when the soil temperature is below 9 degrees. Therefore, depending on the outside temperature, bulbs can be planted from September to December (or even longer if frost does not occur). Summer flowering bulbs can be planted from March to May. However, species that are not hardy, for example dahlias, begonias or zantedeschias, can only be planted when the risk of frost has passed. The rootstocks of perennials can be planted year-round. However, it is then important that the soil is not frozen, or extremely dry for example in summer. The ideal planting time is in spring or autumn.
Are there any bulbs that can be planted in both seasons?
Some bulbs can be planted in spring and autumn, for example anemones, lilies, amaryllis and alliums. We deliver them at the right planting time.
There is mould on my bulb, now what?
Our flower bulbs are checked at several points in the harvesting and processing process. However, we are dependent on this year's harvest. Flower bulbs are a natural product and weather conditions therefore affect the bulb. Because our flower bulbs still go through a strict inspection, we can guarantee that we deliver the best possible quality this season. Flower bulbs with superficial mould can simply be planted. Superficial mould on the bulbs can do no harm (provided the bulbs are not soft) and once under the ground will have no impact on growth and flowering. The flower bulb is strong enough to just flower. Should you not be able to plant the bulbs immediately, it is important to unwrap the bulbs so that they can 'breathe'. Store them in a dry and cool place and still plant as soon as possible.
What is crop rotation?
Crop rotation, also known as crop rotation or crop rotation, is an agricultural practice where crops are rotated annually to prevent soil depletion and maintain soil fertility. This involves the grower growing different varieties of flower bulbs on the same piece of land every year. So where the grower grows tulips one year, for example, the grower puts up hyacinths the next year. And the next year something else. Rotational cultivation is important because it prevents problems with diseases and pests.
What is the bulb size?
The size of flower bulbs is shown in centimetres and refer to the circumference of the bulb. This is the international measurement standard for all flower bulbs.
Help! I have fire in my tulips
Fire in the tulip is caused by the fungus Botrytis tulipae. This fungus thrives in humid conditions and warm temperatures. It is important to note that an outbreak of fire in your tulips is not necessarily due to the quality of the bulbs you planted. The fungus can spread if there are leftover tulip residues in the soil that are affected during the dying off process. This can especially occur if you plant tulips in the same soil several years in a row. If you notice that your tulips are showing fire, there are some steps you can take. Removing badly affected tulips and tearing off affected leaves can help reduce the spread of the fungus. However, it is important to note that these measures are only effective when conditions become drier. If the weather remains humid, the fungus may continue to spread despite your best efforts. In that case, destruction of the entire tulip may occur within a week. It is advisable to be alert to the first signs of fire in your tulips, such as small watery dark green spots on the leaves. If you notice these symptoms, it is best to check for heavily infected tulips nearby and remove them. Removing 'cuttings', tulips that have already emerged from the ground mouldy, can also help reduce fungal pressure. Monitor conditions and take action to prevent further spread of the fungus.
Which bulbs are suitable for indoor growing?
Some bulbous and tuberous plants are suitable for indoor cultivation, or in other words to bloom in the house. The varieties you can buy from Green Garden Flowerbulbs are various Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) bulbs and Selaginella lepidophylla, also known as Rose of Jericho. Also, Narcissus Paperwhite Ziva and the Tazetta Narcissus Avalanache are specially prepared so that they can be pre-grown indoors for extra early flowering (also on water).
Which tulips are suitable for forcing?
Cultivars with strong and good characteristics are suitable for forcing. Green Garden Flowerbulbs sells many flower bulbs to flower growers. The flower growers buy the flower bulbs to pull them into bloom. This is therefore not about the bulbs, but about the result; the flowers that are used as cut flowers. Most flower bulbs bloom in spring. The tulips and other spring bloomers you buy out of season, we owe to flower growers. They control the temperature to make the bulbs bloom earlier than in the garden. Some of the bulbs are planted directly in the greenhouse. Another part is planted in boxes and put in a cold room. The bulbs need at least six to eight weeks of cold first. If you want flower bulbs chilled, you can request this from Green Garden Flowerbulbs well in advance. Once the flower bulbs have had enough cold, growers put them in a warm greenhouse to allow them to bloom.
How does tulip forcing work?
Tulips are foraged in greenhouses. By 'forcing' we mean the process of growing a tulip from bulb to flower. This is mainly done in greenhouses for commercial use. Normally tulips flower in spring, but when they are scalded in greenhouses, they can flower earlier. The first tulips of the new cut tulip season can bloom as early as December. The bulbs of the extra early tulips are treated so that they can flower earlier, which incurs extra costs but can also generate extra yields for the tulip grower. Tulip season really starts in January and lasts until about mid-May for greenhouse tulips. In April, depending on the weather, the first outdoor tulips also bloom. Most tulip fields seen in spring are used for bulb growing, but there are also growers who use outdoor tulips in the field for picking.
Which varieties are suitable for a picking garden?
Flower bulbs have the advantage of flowering at various times. By planting bulbs with varying flowering periods in the picking garden, you can extend the picking period. There are several varieties suitable as cut flowers, with sturdy stems, long flowering period and long vase life. Good pickable varieties for the picking garden can be divided into tall and low varieties: Spring bloomers High varieties -Tulips, Daffodils, Fritillaria persica, Fritillaria imperialis, Eremurus, Camassia. Low varieties - Hyacinths, Crocuses, Hyacinthoides, Fitillaria meleagris, Galanthus, Ixia, Triteleia, Botanical tulips, Botanical Daffodils Summer flowering bulbs High varieties - Dahlias, Lilies, Gladioli, Crocosmia, Ranunculus Low varieties - Anemones, Zantedeschia, Begonia Perennials: High varieties - Astilbe, Canna, Echinacea, Kniphofia, Lavendula, Lupine, Nepeta, Peonies, Phlox Low varieties - Dicentra, Geranium, Coreopsis
Which varieties are suitable for public green spaces?
For public green spaces, robust and colourful flower bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, and alliums are very suitable. Perennials also bring diversity, are low-maintenance and undemanding. Choose varieties that need to be planted once but give years of pleasure, such as: Bulbs: Daffodils, Botanical tulips, Allium, Cammassia, Crocuses, Galanthus. Perennials: Hosta, Aster, Nepeta, Anemone, Alchemilla, Rudbeckia, Salvia, Echinacea.
Which varieties are suitable for naturalising?
Naturalising bulbs are a type of flower bulbs, tubers or rhizomes that can stay in the ground, withstand winter conditions well and flower again year after year. So you only need to plant naturalising bulbs once. Generally, naturalising bulbs have smaller flowers and are also called bijgoed. Some varieties belong to the category of stately plants. You can plant naturalising bulbs in the lawn, between ground covers or perennials and under deciduous shrubs, trees or a hedge. Naturalising bulbs can be combined well with larger bulbs, such as tulips or daffodils. With time, they produce more bulbs themselves, resulting in more flowers appearing every year. Because of this characteristic, naturalising bulbs are particularly suitable for public greenery. Types of naturalising bulbs: Anemone blanda, Anemone nemorosa, Chionodoxa, Crocus, Eranthis hyemalis, Erythronium, Fritillaria meleagris, Galanthus, Hyacinthoides, Ipheion, Muscari, Botanical Daffodils, Scilla siberica.
