Planting begonia tubers
Pot up the tubers in April and let them grow indoors in an environment with high humidity. In mid-May the begonias can be planted outside as soon as the risk of night frost has passed. This allows them to flower earlier. Plant the begonia with the hollow side up and cover with a layer of soil. Begonias thrive best in a spot in the semi-shade in humus-rich, moist soil. Although begonia tubers are less susceptible to frost than, say, dahlias, they cannot survive the winter. Therefore remove them from the soil after the leaves have died off and before there is frost.

Different types of begonias
We offer a wide range of tuberous begonias, including various small- and large-flowered begonias and single- and double-flowered begonias. To make your choice, you can use the filter; for example, choose the bulb size, flowering period, colour, group or height. If you plant begonia tubers in a pot, make sure you use a large pot. A larger pot has a larger water buffer which the thirsty begonia loves.
History of the begonia
The begonia is named after the French herbalist Michel Bégon, a French diplomat who was commissioned by the Sun King Louis XIV to appoint an apothecary to search for medicinal herbs for his overseas missions. This pharmacist took along the Franciscan monk Charles Plumier, who had more botanical knowledge and was also good at drawing. Plumier built a beautiful herbarium and made detailed drawings of plants, which he named himself. In doing so, he appointed botanists and patrons. In Haiti, a genus of plants was found that Plumier named after his patron Bégon, the Begonia. Ghent is an important growing area for the tuberous begonia. E. Vallerand marketed the first large-flowered begonia in 1878 under the name 'Erecta Suberba'.
