Planting dahlia tubers

Dahlias are summer-flowering flowers, so you plant them in the spring. Do wait until the last frost has passed. Dahlia tubers are full of water and therefore freeze quickly, which kills the dahlia.  As soon as the leaves have finished flowering and get yellow, you can dig up the dahlias to store the tubers until next spring. Dahlias like a humus-rich soil. It is important to keep the soil moist, especially in hot, dry summers.

Order dahlia tubers online

Dahlia tubers are available from January. Of course, you can get involved in landscaping and decorating your surroundings before the season starts. It is therefore possible to order flower bulbs and tubers online before the season begins, so you can be sure of your preferred choice of dahlia tubers. The dahlia tubers wil be delivered at the right planting time!  After you have placed an order, you will automatically receive an e-mail with an order confirmation. If you would like more information about ordering, please visit the 'how to order' page.

As soon as the dahlia tubers are available, they will be delivered at your doorstep, or you can collect the order by appointment at Green Garden Flowerbulbs in Hillegom. If you would like more information about shipping, please visit the page 'shipping and delivery'.

Different types of dahlias

We offer a wide range of dahlias in various colours and shapes. There are pompon dahlias with ball-shaped flowers, lush decorative dahlias or the striking collerette dahlias.  To make your choice, you can use the filter; for example, choose the bulb size, the flowering period, the colour, group or height. Dahlia tubers can be planted in the ground manually. Please note that dahlias are very popular with snails; the young leaves of a sprouting dahlia are a delicacy for the snail.

History of the dahlia

The history of the dahlia goes back five centuries. The dahlia was discovered by Spanish explorers among the Aztecs in New Spain, now Mexico. The flower was described by a Spanish naturalist and physician, Fransisco Hernández de Toledo, who was in the service of the Spanish king. He studied botany and medicine and was one of the first scientists to visit the New World in search of medicinal plants. Only much later, in 1789, were seeds of the dahlia sent to the director of the Royal Garden in Madrid. The seeds germinated and plants grew with different coloured flowers. The dahlia was introduced into the Netherlands in 1810. Grower C. Arentz from Leiden was one of the pioneers. In 1819, this grower offered a range of around 70 varieties (colours). In 1813 he was one of the first to succeed in cultivating a double-flowered dahlia.
