Ordering canna rhizomes online
Officially, cannas belong to the bulbous and tuberous plants. Like irises and some anemones, they produce rootstocks or rhizomes. Cannas are frost sensitive, the plants are not resistant to frost. Therefore, do not plant the rhizomes in the ground before the last frost in your area, wait until the frost period is over. Canna rhizomes are available from January onwards. Of course you can already start landscaping and decorating your surroundings before the season starts. It is therefore possible to order online flower bulbs, tubers and rootstocks before the season begins, so you can be sure of your preferred choice of canna. The canna rootstocks are delivered at the right planting time! After you have placed your order, you will automatically receive an e-mail with an order confirmation. If you would like more information about ordering, please visit the page 'how to order'.
As soon as the canna rhizomes are available, they will be delivered to your doorstep, or you can collect the order by appointment at Green Garden Flowerbulbs in Hillegom. If you would like more information about shipping, please visit the page 'shipping and delivery'.
Different kinds of cannas
We offer a wide range of cannas, including beautiful red, pink, yellow and orange cannas. There are small varieties of cannas from less than half a metre to cannas of over a metre. The smaller cannas do well in pots or in borders. The larger varieties look great as a background plant. Do not plant them in the semi-shade as they will not produce flowers. For early flowering, you can pre-cultivate your canna indoors in March. There are many flowers that go very well with cannas. Combine them with calla, dahlias and crocosmias, for example. To make your choice you can use the filter; choose for example the bulb size, flowering period, colour, group or height.
History of the canna
Originally, the canna comes from Central and South America. The name is derived from the Celtic name cana: a name for a kind of reed, hence the name: flower reed. The French also call the plant the faux sucrier, the false sugar cane. At the beginning of the 19th century the canna was first cultivated. By the end of this century, Italian and French breeders had developed a series of large-flowered hybrids (also called orchid-flowering or Italian cannabis). In the first decades of the 1900s, tropical gardens with large cannae were very popular. We still often see the familiar canna beds in municipal parks.
