History of agapanthus (African Lily)
Agapanthus also known as African Lily belongs to the Liliaceae family. The Latin name Agapanthus is derived from the Greek "agape" which literally means love and "anthos" which stands for flower. The Agapanthus is therefore a true love flower. Agapanthus originally comes from South Africa. Since the 17th century, the leaf bearing variety is known in Europe; The United East India Company founded in 1652 a settlement at the Cape in South Africa. From there, many African plants were shipped to Holland, including Agapanthus. After that, it took quite a long time before the deciduous species also became known in Europe. At the moment there are many different Agapanthus cultivars available. Over the years so many varieties have been bred that there are now more than 600 different species available.
