Planting peonies

Peonies thrive in moist, nutrient-rich soil and prefer a sunny spot in the garden. Avoid planting the rootstocks too deep, as this can hinder flowering. The “eyes” of the rootstock should sit just 1–2 cm below the soil surface. Peonies can be planted either in autumn or spring, as they are winter-hardy. Note that peonies usually don’t produce many flowers in their first year. Rootstocks in size 3/5 tend to flower sooner than those in size 2/3. When planted in the fall, rootstocks have more time to develop additional roots, which results in more flowers. In the second year, they bloom generously. After 6 to 10 years, peony plants can be lifted and divided to be replanted in a new location.

The history of the peony

Paeonia is a genus in the family Paeoniaceae. The botanical name Paeonia dates back to ancient times. Paeon was the god of healing in ancient Greece. Peonies were originally cultivated for medicinal use. The roots of this “herb” were traditionally used in Chinese medicine to treat a variety of ailments.
